Inheritance tax and NHS pensions: What doctors need to know

Concerns around pensions are once again rising among GPs. Having already faced a series of reforms in recent years, the government’s latest plans to make some pensions liable for Inheritance Tax (IHT) have created fresh uncertainty across the profession.

Since the Autumn Budget announcement that unused pension funds and death benefits could become subject to IHT from April 2027, many doctors have been asking the same question: “Will my NHS Pension Scheme benefits now be taxed after I die?”
