If you have ever walked onto a new ward and felt completely lost – not because of the clinical work, but because of the array of people you need to work with – then this article is for you.
Hospital life is governed as much by unwritten rules, informal hierarchies and interpersonal dynamics as it is by protocols and guidelines. Nobody hands you a map for this on your first day, and yet your ability to navigate it will shape your experience, your learning, and ultimately the care your patients receive.
What follows is not a definitive guide (I am still very much learning myself) but rather the observations of a surgical trainee who has picked up a few things the hard way.
