The radiologist who made it to Wimbledon centre court

For 25 years Dr Subhasis Basu has complemented his medical career with a surprising second job as a tennis official at major professional tournaments.

As a radiologist Dr Subhasis Basu needs to apply his keen attention to detail every day as he carefully analyses scans. That precision has also served him well in his career outside of medicine – as a high-level tennis umpire. It even earned him a spot on centre court at Wimbledon.

In between shifts as a consultant musculoskeletal and sports medicine radiologist at Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, Basu has spent time on the court with the likes of Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Emma Raducanu.

Being a tennis official kept me on the straight and narrow, it gave me diversions outside of my medical studies

But his officiating career recently came to an end when live electronic line-calling replaced on-court judges.
