With science under siege and misinformation more prevalent than ever, there is growing urgency for doctors to do more to champion evidence-based medicine, says Professor Barbara Casadei. The head of the National Heart and Lung Institute at Imperial College London and new editor of JAMA Cardiology spoke to Erin Dean about her love for science, paving the way for other women – and bad career advice.

At a moment when international order is in upheaval, funding for American science and medical research has been slashed dramatically and transatlantic cooperation seems particularly fragile, Professor Barbara Casadei has just become the first European to serve as editor-in-chief of the US-based journal JAMA Cardiology. She is also the first woman to hold the role.
