A silver lining of the pandemic is that vaccine technology has accelerated rapidly - recent breakthroughs are now being targeted at cancers, neurodegenerative diseases and more.

“[The COVID-19 pandemic] meant that [development in vaccines] that might have unspooled over the next decade or even 15 years, were compressed down into a year or a year and a half,” Dr Richard Hackett, CEO of the Coalition for Epidemic Preparedness and Innovations, told The Guardian in April.1
