Consultant suspended after running dozens of private clinics during NHS hours

A consultant has been suspended for 12 months for dishonestly running private clinics for a “sustained” period while contracted to work for an NHS hospital.

Dr Moboladale Ojutiku undertook 44 clinics at a private hospital when he should have been onsite working as a consultant obstetrician and gynaecologist at Basildon University Hospital, a tribunal found.

The panel heard that Ojutiku was working at Chartwell Private Hospital on three Friday afternoons a month when he was due to be undertaking NHS supporting professional activities (SPA) time.

He was paid £24,000 from Ramsay Health and more than £5,000 by Mid and South Essex NHS Foundation Trust while running the clinics between April 2017 to May 2019, the hearing was told.

The consultant, who has since retired from NHS work, knew that he was not permitted to take on private work while contracted to the trust, should have been at the hospital and had not obtained permission for the work, the panel concluded.
