A neonatal consultant has been recognised for her work raising awareness of jaundice cases in babies with darker skin tones.

Dr Helen Gbinigie, who works at the Oliver Fisher Neonatal Unit in Gillingham, has won the Inclusive Leader of the Year award at the National BAME Health and Care Awards.

She was nominated for leading the Jaundice in Darker Skin Tone Babies Programme – a national project aimed at tackling inequalities in the care of babies with neonatal.

The programme has trained over 1,200 healthcare professionals across more than 80 NHS organisations.

The judges said her inclusive thinking had grown into a national programme that has the potential to improve outcomes for babies.

Gbinigie said: “Creating long-term change requires joint working, compassion and a shared commitment to equity.

“I am proud of what I have achieved, working in partnership with colleagues at the hospital, Kent and Medway Local Maternity and Neonatal System (LMNS) and across healthcare systems regionally and nationally.”
