Corporate manslaughter probe at NHS trust that cared for Calocane

The NHS mental health trust that treated Nottingham attacks perpetrator Valdo Calocane is being investigated for corporate manslaughter.

Northumbria Police is looking at matters relating to the care and treatment of Calocane by Nottinghamshire Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust (NHFT), the trust has said.

Calocane, who was under the care of NHFT from 2020 until 2022, stabbed students Barnaby Webber and Grace O’Malley-Kumar, both 19, and caretaker Ian Coates, 65, in Nottingham in the early hours of 13 June, 2023.

The bereaved family of Barnaby Webber welcomed the police investigation and said staff, including "negligent clinicians", should be held to account.

Calocane was sentenced to an indefinite hospital order after he pleaded guilty to manslaughter and attempted murder.

The former mechanical engineering student had been sectioned four times while under the care of NHFT, before he was discharged to his GP.

'Trust will be co-operating fully'

A public inquiry, which looked at events leading up to the killings, heard he was discharged by the trust’s Early Intervention in Psychosis (EIP) service because he failed to turn up for appointments and the team had “lost” him.
