Doctor who made antisemitic jokes given warning

A resident doctor who posted "offensive" remarks online about Jews has been allowed to continue practising after a disciplinary panel ruled his comments were not intentionally antisemitic.

Dr Martin Whyte, a paediatrician and deputy chairman of the BMA's junior doctors’ committee, joked about gassing Jews and wrote that he found videos about the Holocaust being a sham to be “pretty convincing", according to according to minutes of the GMC's investigations committee.

The specialist trainee in paediatrics at Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust received a formal warning by the regulator.

In 2023, he had been suspended by the union in 2023 after a national newspaper reported on his posts on X from 2018.

The GMC found that Dr Whyte’s social media posts, described as “grossly offensive,” did not meet the threshold for suspension or removal from the medical register. The panel concluded that his actions fell “just short of that which would be considered serious enough to pose a risk to public protection.”
