The General Medical Council is looking into 62 cases related to maternity care at under-review Nottingham University Hospitals NHS Trust.
Of these, 53 are at an initial assessment stage to see if they meet the threshold to investigate the fitness to practise of a doctor, the regulator said.
The other nine have proceeded to an early investigative stage, the GMC’s fitness to practise director Anthony Omo told a meeting earlier this month for families affected by the trust’s maternity failings.
The body would not say how many doctors are involved in the cases.
The trust’s maternity services are currently the subject of the biggest review of its kind in the NHS, with about 2,500 cases being examined.
It is being led by senior midwife Donna Ockenden, and due to report back in June.
GMC investigators are also reviewing over 300 information reports passed to them from the independent review, the regulator said.
