You’ve probably heard that rules around certifying deaths are about to change in England and Wales. But this possibility has followed doctors for decades and never amounted to much. So what’s different now? Here we outline all you need to know before the transition.

UPDATE: After publishing this article, the Ministry of Justice said the new death certification system for doctors in England and Wales had been delayed again. The system will now go live in September.
