Levels of discrimination, including racism, sexism and homophobia, experienced daily by NHS doctors is “beyond belief”, a medical college has warned.
The Royal College of Emergency Medicine (RCEM) said that hospital staff are subjected to “absolutely vile behaviour” every day but often receive little support from employers.
The college backed calls from NHS leaders for a national campaign on respect for NHS staff.
The NHS Alliance, which represents NHS trusts, said staff from diverse backgrounds feel particularly under threat at present.
RCEM president Dr Ian Higginson said: “While violence and aggression are problems faced by all NHS workers, the levels of racism, sexism, homophobia, transphobia and all other forms of discrimination my colleagues face on a daily basis have become distressing and at times beyond belief.”
