The General Medical Council’s first survey for seven years for locally employed and specialty, associate specialist, and specialist doctors is now open.

The survey is open to 85,000 doctors about their roles, motivations, workplace experiences and access to training and development.

It is the first time since 2019 that such a detailed questionnaire has been conducted by the regulator on these cohorts of doctors.

GMC chief executive Charlie Massey said: “There are growing numbers of doctors in LE and SAS roles. Understanding what they experience at work, and how they see their careers, is important not just for future workforce planning but also for good patient care.”

The previous survey revealed many LE and SAS doctors faced challenges in career progression, as well as suffering unfair treatment such as rudeness and incivility.

This resulted in changes to guidance on professional behaviours and a more flexible approach to accessing the specialist register.
