NHS doctor struck off after encouraging flatmate’s illegal 'surgical' procedures

An NHS doctor has been struck off after encouraging "life-altering" illegal procedures carried out at home by his flatmate.

Dr Baraa Almasri lived with a man - reported by the Independent to be Marius Gustavson - who was jailed for life in 2024 after admitting offences including five counts of causing grievous bodily harm with intent.

A medical tribunal heard Almasri's flatmate, referred to as Mr A, is serving a minimum term of 22 years after carrying out unnecessary and permanent "surgery" on people in his basement flat.

Almasri was arrested in December 2021 while police were investigating Mr A.

No charges were brought against the doctor after the Crown Prosecution Service decided there was insufficient evidence to take him to court on conspiracy to cause grievous bodily harm.

But police referred Almasri to the GMC, raising concerns that the doctor knew “unnecessary surgery was taking place by non-medically qualified persons in a basement flat, causing permanent and serious injuries".
