Resident doctors accept pay offer and end strikes

Resident doctors in England have voted to accept the government’s latest offer on pay and working conditions ending strike action, the British Medical Association said.

Doctors have decided the current offer “is sufficient to continue on the road to pay restoration”.

The BMA’s resident doctors committee (RDC) accepted the deal which includes an average 6.6% pay uplift, after 53% of eligible doctor members voted in favour.

Dr Jack Fletcher, chair of RDC, said: “Resident doctors have spoken. They have decided that the current offer is sufficient to continue on the road to pay restoration, and sufficient to address the absurd lack of jobs in the NHS...

“We spent far too long at loggerheads with the government when a solution in everyone’s interest was waiting for us: more jobs for doctors, better pay for doctors, and a better-staffed NHS”, Fletcher added.

The new package includes standard 2016 resident doctor contract terms for all locally employed doctors and the pay uplift to be fully implemented by April 2027.
