The 10 Year Health Plan: How will it shape the working lives of doctors?

Almost a year to the day after Labour won the general election, health secretary Wes Streeting laid out his long-term vision for the NHS in England with the publication of the 10 Year Health Plan.

Streeting’s plan envisions a future where care is delivered as locally as it can be, and it is “digital-by-default, in a patient's home where possible, in a neighbourhood health centre when needed, in a hospital if necessary”.

Pushing more care away from hospitals and into new neighbourhood health centres staffed with multi-disciplinary teams is at the heart of the plan.

This includes developing two new contracts enabling GPs to cover larger geographical areas, the plan says.

NHS app will create a 'doctor in patients' pockets'

The NHS app is a key part of the government’s new vision for the NHS. It will allow patients to communicate with doctors directly, draft and view their care plans, book and hold appointments and leave feedback by 2028, according to the plan.
