Guidelines on antibiotic use for newborns should be followed more closely to reduce antibiotic use, a new study suggests.

Assessing the infant's risk factors and clinical markers after 36 hours could allow a shorter duration of antibiotic treatment, the current National Institute for Health and Clinical Excellence guidance states.
