Two-thirds of doctors hold multiple roles as “portfolio careers” become more popular in the profession, a poll has suggested.
A survey of 500 doctors found that the number holding more than one role, including a mix of NHS, private practice, teaching, consultancy or research, increased from 55% in 2024 to 67% this year.
More than six in 10 (65%) doctors pursue the approach for professional growth, while 63% cited increased income potential.
In the survey, carried out by financial services provider Wesleyan, more than half (53%) of respondents valued the flexibility, and 47% reported better work-life balance.
Alec Collie, head of medical at Wesleyan, said many doctors were using the approach to escape the crushing pressures of full-time NHS work.
"The growth in portfolio careers reflects broader shifts in healthcare," he said. "We're seeing increased demand for private practice as patients seek alternatives to NHS waiting lists, creating a rise in opportunities for doctors.
